High mortality and morbidity of neonatal piglets is a significant problem to the swine industry. The majority of pigletsí deaths, during the suckling period, occur during the first three days of the pigletís life. Itís a common practice to supply extra fat to the sow during the last period of gestation, hoping that this will improve the energy level of the newborns. However, this practise has met only a small success. Therefore, we now focus on its birth. The energy supplied is in the form of medium chain triglycerides (MCT). Supplementation of newborn piglets with MCT has been shown to decrease nitrogen excretion and breakdown of liver glycogen. There observations indicate that newborn piglets utilize MCT as an energy source rather than body reserves of glycogen and protein.

An elastic plastic tube attached to a syringe that contains 12cc liquid with triglycerides, goes thru the oesophagus to the animalís stomach and the triglycerides are slowly administered.
